Everything Starts with a Breath
I believe that yoga is not about “doing yoga” or cranking into poses. Yoga is about finding the way that works for you on the day to stretch and strenghen your body.
Yoga for the imperfect body is for anyone who is holding back. It’s for you if you have limitations due to chronic illness, an operation or injury. Yoga for the imperfect body is about working slowly, learning the yoga moves and adapting for how your body is on the specific day. It’s working with yourself, not trying to be something you’re not.
My yoga for the imperfect body course is the perfect opportunity for you to explore yoga. It’s designed to be perfect for beginners or returners of any age or shape.
Course numbers are limited and week by week you learn and build your yoga practice.
Yoga for the imperfect body is a slow, steady practice with time for your questions. The 45 minute session comprises of an introduction, breathing, warm-up, asana, relax and questions.
Asana
Asana’s are the yoga shapes. Many of us come into yoga for the benefits of stretching and exercising the body through Asana. But there is so much more to yoga than exercise. That is why I say “everything starts with a breath”. How you breathe and how you move matters.
If someone just cranks into the poses, they are at real risk of hurting their body, causing injury and crucially are missing out on the slow steady awakening of the full yoga experience that utilizes your mind to support your body and your body to support your mind. Practiced carefully with a teacher who understands that each client is an individual helps you evolve as you experiment and work with your body and not against it.
I don’t deny that exercise is an important part of yoga practice, the pleasure of a practice that flows is and always should be joyful.
Yoga is an ancient practice honed over thousands of years to the modern, western practice that we benefit from today in the 21st Century. Yoga practice is conscious movement that you build from awareness, as you develop your practice you are always in the moment. Yoga is terrific for mental health as you learn stillness, being in the moment and to leave your worries at the door and off the mat.
Through Asana practice you will stengthen and make your body healthier. Through exploration you notice, become informed about yourself and see the journey as a transformation to a healthier, happy you.
Join me as I ease you in gently as I guide you through the basics in Yoga for the Imperfect Body and beyond in my follow-on classes. We touch on all aspects of western yoga practice, informing you and enabling you to explore and decide which direction you wish to take your yoga practice.
Remember yoga is not a religious practice, neither is it against religion. Yoga is suitable for those of any religion or none.
Why 45 minutes?
Yoga is a skill, one that anyone can learn and the poses can be adapted to suit individual needs. This is fantastic because anyone can learn a skill. Knowing that the poses can be adapted to suit our imperfect bodies is encouraging and encourages you to build your practice perfectly suited to your needs.
That is why most of my classes are 45 minutes.

Yoga is - Yoga with Lyn - Yoga is Not
Yoga is ….
- Whatever you want it to be
- As individual as you
- For anyone
- A mind body experience
- A fantastic way to build flexibility and strength
- Loving and kind
- An act of self-care and self-love
- Suitable for any body
Yoga with me …
- Celebrates your individuality
- Works around your limitations
- Grows your practice and increases your flexibility
- Gives you the tools to improve your health
- Safeguards your future health
- Only in small groups
You don’t have to be good at yoga to practice yoga. Yoga is about taking the time to connect to yourself and something bigger than yourself, all at once. It’s about creating harmony between your mind, your body and heart so that you may feel whole and truly healthy. It’s also equipping yourself with the tools necessary for healing and for knowing its ok to fall.
A practice not a perfect for a reason
Yoga is not …
- All back bends and handstands
- Aligned to any particular religion, neither is it religious
- Only for flexible people
- Against Christian faith
- Loud
- About cranking into difficult shapes
Don’t think of yoga as something in terms of flexibility, ability and achievement, its not about comparing yourself to others, cracking into uncomfortable poses to think you’ve achieved the goal. The goal should always be to work with yourself, not compete against others. Yes, yoga builds flexibility, through regular practice your ability grows and you will feel a sense of achievement.
About Lyn
“My yoga journey began in my early 20s when I did a yoga teaching course.”
Lyn says that like so many, family life and corporate life took over as her dreams and aspirations were put on hold. However, her personal practice continued, alternative exercise means were tried, but she always returned to yoga. It was as though she were being pulled in that direction. Later in her life she listened to her heart and realised the value of the full yoga experience. Although she’d always enjoyed the mind body connection element of yoga, gradually she embraced the fuller full spiritual aspects of yoga practice.
Lyn says:
“Yoga connects the mind, body and the heart. Whilst yoga is not a religious practice it is a spiritual practice and you, the individual decide how much you want it to be so.”
Since experiencing complications during her diagnosis for cancer, Lyn also suffered a traumatic experience during treatment and ongoing post operative complications. These all served to strengthen her yoga practice and now having undertaken additional courses and drawing on other teaching experiences, Lyn has devised some carefully designed courses for those recovering from operations, trauma and cancer that are suitable for anyone who doesn’t think they have the right body to learn and practice yoga.
